At Lakefield Elementary School we are committed to helping our local communities and communities around the world and we have been doing this for many years. This year our school collected food, toiletries, games and activities for the Joshua Group. Grade levels collected items and when they fulfilled the challenge, each class illuminated a string of lights on the giving tree. We also collected money through a variety of initiatives for a community in Nepal.
Our Generosity Tree was fully lit as the Twenty classes fulfilled their generosity challenge.

Twas the season of giving here at Lakefield once again. During December we had several initiatives happening at Lakefield where the School Community pulled together to help those in need and to promote our UNESCO Status.

Statement from Mrs. Dingee regarding Nepal:
Many of you are probably wondering why we should bother raising money for a community on the other side of the world, in a country many of us will probably never visit, although I would encourage you to.
When I heard Mrs McNamee mention that we needed a global initiative I knew immediately it was a sign that I needed to do something to help out again. When I left Nepal, I did not want to leave as someone who had promised to continue to help and then returns home and acts like a hero for spending a couple of weeks in a third world country where I was treated like royalty and really didn’t do much of anything to help out, just to say that I had some “volunteer experience”. Since I’ve returned to Canada and started building a life here, I see how much we consume, how much we have, and how we don’t think twice about spending $100 on a meal or $200 on a new pair of winter boots. It is so easy to get wrapped up in wants that we forget to be thankful for all of our needs that are fulfilled on a daily basis. I was able to witness first hand people had, by our standards, nothing. People who without question, welcomed me into their homes, offered me food and water and genuine kindness. I’d like to return that kindness and educate our students about another part of the world and encourage you all to be brave enough to one day visit a place like Gawai, Nepal. Give what you can when you can and try to make our world a better and brighter place. Continue to watch for updates as we receive photos and videos of how the money collected is being used in Nepal.
Here are some photos from Ranjan in Nepal. Due to COVID-19, they have been on lock-down in his area so the construction was delayed. With some of the extra money, they bought buffalo to help a few of the struggling families in the area.
